The case in brief

Case summary

The season opener was rewritten in the summer and then trimmed on the day. Three passes are on file — the Blue of 8 July, a set of Pink pages ten days later, and a full Green of 21 July — and between them they show Scully’s smallpox science being sharpened word by word and the Bounty Hunter’s wound acquiring its green ooze.

What the broadcast then removed is mostly Mulder pleading. Two of his lines to the Bounty Hunter in the parking lot are gone, dialogue inside the honeycomb bunker is trimmed, and Skinner lost the line that sends Scully to Pendrell. What it added is small and practical — a car running out of gas, a promise that Jeremiah Smith will get his hearing.

Cut from screen

Dialogue cut or trimmed between the archived drafts and the DVD captions.

Blue & Green sc.49 · aired 33:06–33:31

The parking-lot confrontation is the episode’s moral centre: Mulder on the ground, the Bounty Hunter holding him up by the collar, and the offer of a life for a life. Both drafts give the alien a paragraph explaining why Jeremiah must die, and give Mulder a last plea. Neither survives.

GREEN (07/21/96), SC.49 — THE EXCHANGE AS WRITTEN

BOUNTY HUNTER: He must. His miracles are used to confound us. But it’s all just trickery. Like everything you’ve seen. MULDER: That girl is my sister! BOUNTY HUNTER: He shows you pieces but tells you nothing of the whole… MULDER: Kill me. Let them go. BOUNTY HUNTER: You’d trade your life for his? MULDER: For my mother’s. (beat) Please. Her life is inconsequential to you. BOUNTY HUNTER: (gently) Everything dies.

AIRED — 33:06–33:31

“Please. You can’t kill him. He can’t die.” / “He must.” / “That girl is my sister.” / “He shows you pieces, but tells you nothing of the whole, because he’s inconsequential, a traitor to the project.” / “Kill me. Let them go.” / “You’d trade your life for his?” / “For my mother’s.” / (eight seconds) / “Everything dies.”
Revision trail: Blue → Green (“it’s all just trickery” marked X) → both lines cut for air

The captions leave no room for either: “He must” is at 33:11 and “That girl is my sister” at 33:12. The trickery line had just been revised at the Green — the writer was still working on it three days before the shoot — and it went anyway. What is lost with it is the alien’s account of Jeremiah as a conjuror; on the disc he is only “inconsequential.” And Mulder’s “Please” moves: the script has him beg at the end, the broadcast has him beg at the start, before he has been answered.

Blue & Green sc.42 · aired 26:27–28:04

Mulder, Jeremiah and the girl enter the apiary with a gas can. The report identifies dialogue removed from this sequence and an 86-second gap in the DVD captions while the wall comes down.

GREEN (07/21/96), SC.42 — SCRIPT EXCERPT

MULDER: Well, then… does anybody have a match? JEREMIAH: I think we walked into our own trap. […] MULDER: I need that gas can… JEREMIAH: What are you doing?! MULDER: Trying to save our lives. […] MULDER: RUN!

AIRED — 26:27–28:04

“Is that the only way out?” / “I think we’ve walked into our own trap.” / — eighty-six seconds of bees — / “[Groans] Come on!”
Revision trail: Blue → Green → dialogue trimmed for air

“Does anybody have a match?” is the only joke the script gives Mulder after his mother’s collapse, and it is the one line in the sequence that tells the audience what he is about to do with the gasoline. Without it, the broadcast plays the honeycomb wall as a thing that happens to the Bounty Hunter rather than a thing Mulder does.

Blue & Green sc.26 · aired 15:18–15:37

GREEN (07/21/96), SC.26

Jeremiah points to the hills behind Mulder. JEREMIAH: Over those hills. MULDER: I’m a happy wanderer. And he starts out on foot.

AIRED — 15:18–15:37

“That’s it for the gas.” / “How much further from here?” / “About 20 miles. Maybe half that on foot over those hills.” / “Let’s go.”

The script describes the Honda “running on fumes” in a stage direction and lets Mulder make a small joke of the walk ahead. The disc says the practical thing out loud and drops the joke. Recorded with the honeycomb finding above: every light line Mulder was given in the middle of this episode was removed.

Blue & Green sc.27 · aired 16:38

GREEN (07/21/96), SC.27

SKINNER: Well, we have, Agent Scully. SCULLY: (surprised) Sir? SKINNER: There’s something I’d like you to look at right away. Something that might help you “formulate” a clearer picture for us about who Jeremiah Smith is. And what he’s up to.

On the disc, “Well, we have, Agent Scully” / “Sir?” is at 16:38 and Pendrell is already talking at 16:41. The line that threw Scully’s own word back at her — she had just said the agents “haven’t exactly formulated any clear suspicions” — is gone, and with it the sarcasm.

Blue & Green sc.28 · aired 16:41–17:25

GREEN (07/21/96), SC.28 — NOT ON THE DISC

PENDRELL: Can you see alright, Agent Scully? He adjusts his chair so that she might stand closer. A gesture that should not be lost on the audience.

The script is explicit that Pendrell’s crush is meant to register. The caption track runs straight from the file description to “The data was all locked in password files” with no line between; if the chair business was shot, it was shot silent.

Reworded dialogue and additions in the aired episode.

Blue & Green sc.30 · aired 19:26–19:40

GREEN (07/21/96), SC.30

MULDER: WHAT IS GOING ON HERE!! JEREMIAH: What did I tell you, Mr. Mulder — MULDER: It’s my sister! JEREMIAH: Yes. MULDER: But… it can’t be. She’s no older than the day she was taken.

AIRED — 19:26–19:40

“What is this?” / “What’s going on here?” / “What did I tell you?” / “That looks just like my sister.” / “But that’s not possible. She’s no older than the day she was taken.”
Revision trail: Blue → Green → Aired, reworded

A one-word change of stance. On the page Mulder asserts and Jeremiah confirms; on the disc Mulder compares, Jeremiah says nothing, and the script’s “Yes” is never spoken. The broadcast is more careful than the draft about what it lets the audience believe in the first act — and, as it turns out, more honest.

Blue & Green sc.34 · aired 22:00

GREEN (07/21/96), SC.34

JEREMIAH: I’m going to go see if I can find a car.

AIRED — 22:00

“I’ll go see if I can find some gas.”

The car that ran dry is the one they drive away in, and the gas can Jeremiah is carrying two scenes later is what saves them in the bunker. Both drafts already had the can; neither had a line explaining where it came from. The disc supplies it.

in neither draft · aired 32:50

AIRED — 32:47–32:51

SCULLY: There’s a lot of people who want to talk to Jeremiah Smith. MULDER: They’ll get their chance. We’ll be there.

The script ends the phone call on Scully’s line and cuts to the squeal of tyres. The broadcast gives Mulder an answer — a promise, made about four seconds before the truck hits the phone booth — that is in no draft on file.

in neither draft · aired 33:56–34:15

AIRED — 33:56–34:15

“[Man] He’s in touch with the perimeter.” / “[Woman] I’m sorry, sir. For security reasons —” / “Five hours we’re out here swinging in the wind, Agent Scully.” / “Something’s wrong. Something happened.” / “You don’t have any way of getting a hold of him?”

Skinner’s “swinging in the wind” and Scully’s reply are scripted. The agent’s radio line, the receptionist, and Skinner’s second question are not; they were added to fill the corridor before Mulder walks in.

Blue & Green sc.41 · aired 25:36

GREEN (07/21/96), SC.41

MULDER: So this isn’t a place we’re going to want to hide. JEREMIAH: No. You have no immunity to them.

AIRED — 25:36–25:38

“It’s probably not a good idea to hide in there.” / “You have no immunity to them.” / “But you do?”

Small, and recorded for its tone: the script’s flat statement became a hedge. Jeremiah’s “No” is dropped and his “immunity” line follows directly.

He comes back from Canada with nothing, and she is the one waiting.

Blue & Green sc.51 · aired 34:52 & 35:01

GREEN (07/21/96), SC.51

Scully moves to his side, taking a blanket from the Nurse, putting it around Mulder’s shoulders. MULDER: She’ll never know. Scully takes Mulder in her arms and he begins to sob, collapsing into her. MULDER: She’ll never know.

Both lines aired, nine seconds apart, the second one captioned as a whisper. The embrace is a stage direction and the caption track cannot see it — what it can confirm is that the two lines are separated by exactly the silence the script asks for.

Blue & Green sc.54 · aired 36:59–38:51

The bedside scene reaches the screen almost word for word, including the exchange the season is built on: “Nothing happens in contradiction to nature, only in contradiction to what we know of it. And that’s a place to start. That’s where the hope is.” One change: the script has Scully say “you can’t give up on that”; on the disc it is “you can’t give up on her.”

Recorded also because of what did not survive around it. The Green wants Skinner to touch the bruises on Scully’s neck and Pendrell to move his chair for her; the first is a stage direction the captions cannot check, the second is a line, and it was cut. The report reads the bedside scene as a moment of intimacy between Mulder and Scully; captions alone cannot establish every gesture in the episode.
